Listening to New Brigade, the impressive debut from Danish punks Iceage, a few years ago, I was immediately hooked on the throwback nihilistic sound of these lads (all four in their teens at the time). Last year’s follow-up, You’re Nothing, also was very good. Yet I couldn’t help thinking “where do these guy go from here?”
I had a feeling that at some point Iceage would stretch stylistically. These guys were too good to do the same thing over and over. With its third album, Plowing Into the Field of Love, the band confirmed my hunch. This album is a mix of styles, which is still pretty ferocious in parts. What I didn’t expect was horns, piano, clearly understandable vocals and even a country number (The Lord’s Favorite). This is a highly recommended album.
Iceage plays Empty Bottle October 22.
