New band: Young Jesus plans album

Young Jesus is a foursome who formed in Chicago and moved to L.A.

The band just signed to Saddle Creek, the long-running Omaha record label, and plans to release a self-titled album in February.

Slint, Built to Spill, Pile and others are name checked in the band’s publicity material.

Here’s a video for the almost 10-minute song Feeling, which does draw on some of the aforementioned influences.

Angel Olsen releases Phases, a collection of demos, B-sides

As everything else with Angel Olsen, her just-released collection of demos, B-sides and outtakes has stunning moments.

For instance, on Phases, Olsen treats us to Sans, a surprisingly good demo from 2015.

The standout track on the new release is Special, an outtake from her excellent 2016 album, My Woman.

It says something about an artist when even her cast-off songs are so compelling. Olsen is one of the best American singer-songwriters today.

Catch her live. Olsen plays Chicago’s Riviera Theatre December 9.

Listen to a new Ty Segall song

It’s been three weeks since Ty Segall released a new song.

So, of course, it’s time for yet another one.

Segall just released My Lady’s On Fire. It’s a ballad but takes a little different approach than much of his catalog. A little piano and saxophone end this pop song on a jazzy note.

Check it out here.
